Lice Treatment: 5 Home Remedies to Treat Naturally

Head lice can be a bother, especially if they spread to multiple people in the same household. Although they do not transmit diseases, they can cause irritation and discomfort, such as scalp sores, difficulty sleeping, and difficulty concentrating due to the constant itch. Close contacts, such as sharing personal items like hats or hair brushes, or direct head-to-head contact, is how lice spread from person to person.

Head lice are most commonly found in school-aged children and are more common in girls, but they can be found at any age. Though the vexing sensation caused by these insects may be too much to bear, numerous remedies are available. Here’s a guide on performing head lice treatment at home that you can do without spending much money.

Spray Your Hair with Vinegar

The acidity of vinegar can be lethal to lice and aid in the dissolution of the glue used by lice to attach their eggs (also known as “nits”) to the hair shaft. To use vinegar as a lice treatment, fill a spray bottle with equal vinegar and water and apply it to the hair and scalp.

Coat the entire head, paying special attention to the nape of the neck and behind the ears. Cover your head with a shower cap and leave the vinegar solution on for at least an hour before rinsing and shampooing your hair as usual.

Massage Your Hair with Essential Oils

Tea tree oil is thought to have insecticidal properties, which could kill lice and their eggs. To treat head lice, combine a few drops of tea tree oil with carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil, and apply it to the hair and scalp. After that, let it sit on your head by covering it with a shower cap for several hours before rinsing it away.

You can also use a few drops of tea tree oil in your regular shampoo to wash your hair. It is critical to use caution when using essential oils to treat head lice and to follow the label’s instructions because they may irritate some people.

Apply Onion Juice to Your Hair

Did you know that onions promote hair growth? Furthermore, this remedy’s antifungal and antibacterial properties aid in killing lice and their eggs. Applying onion juice directly to your scalp and hair, making sure to cover the entire head, is one way to use it for your hair. Allow the juice to sit on your hair for at least an hour, preferably overnight, before rinsing it out with water.

This remedy will not remove your lice immediately, but repeating the process regularly will. However, it is important to note that using onion juice as a treatment for head lice can be time-consuming and only sometimes effective. Furthermore, some people may find the strong smell of onion juice offensive.

Comb Your Hair with Fine-Tooth Comb

Make sure to wet your hair and apply conditioner before using a fine tooth comb to remove lice. Starting at the roots, comb through small sections of hair with the fine tooth comb, moving from the scalp to the ends of the hair. After each pass, inspect the comb for any lice or nits caught in the teeth. Wipe them away with a paper towel or tissue if you find any.

Repeat the combing process until all hair sections have been combed through. Then, remove any remaining lice or nits from your hair using regular shampoo. Finally, use a hair dryer to the highest heat to help kill any remaining lice.

Clean Your House Regularly

Regularly wash your bedding, towels, or other items that may have come into contact with lice in hot water and dry them on high heat. You should also regularly vacuum carpets, upholstery, and other surfaces, for they may also be exposed to lice. Moreover, You should also disinfect hair care tools such as brushes and combs by soaking them in hot water for at least 10 minutes.

Lice can also be found in stuffed animals or other non-washable items so if that happens, place them in a plastic bag and tightly seal them for a week. This procedure kills any remaining lice. Finally, wash hats, scarves, and other lice-infested clothing items in hot water and dry them on high heat.

Bottom Line

You cannot avoid head lice regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status. Furthermore, poor hygiene does not cause them; you can get head lice if exposed to people who have it. However, it would be best if you were not concerned because numerous remedies are available to help you get rid of these insects. If you follow the steps above regularly, you will be safe from this infestation.

While these precautions can help reduce the spread of head lice, they cannot guarantee that you will be free of it forever. If you or someone in your household has head lice, you must seek medical attention. You can also buy anti-head lice shampoo and use it regularly to protect yourself further.
